5 Steps To Declutter & Organize Your Messy Kitchen Drawers

1. Empty Your Drawers Completely

Clearing everything out first is the easiest way instead of decluttering one item at a time.

If you try decluttering your items and sorting them as you remove them one-by-one, it will take way too long and become way too intimidating…

Overall, your drawers need a reset, not a few things removed or relocated.

Especially if it’s a junk drawer, you should empty it fully and then reset by adding and reorganizing what needs to stay.

2. Identify Your Essential Items

Pick what items need to stay, and relocate other needed items to other areas in your kitchen.

Ideally, these items serve a purpose in your kitchen and fit the theme of the drawer:

  • Utensils
  • Measuring tools
  • Miscellaneous
  • Supplies
  • Tea/Coffee

3. Set Aside Unneeded Items

Keep it simple…

Use a box to keep all of the unwanted items and decide later whether you will sell, donate, or trash them.

You don’t need to decide what to do with your stuff right away; the main objective is to get the mess cleared out and reorganized first.

4. Reorganize Your Drawer

Now, when you go to reorganize your drawer and start adding items back, follow these guidelines to help make the process smoother:

  • Group similar categories together (batteries, rubber bands, cookbooks)
  • Use organizational solutions where necessary
  • Be careful not to overdo it with organizational products

5. Categorize Your Drawers

Finally, ensure that your drawers serve a purpose in your kitchen and stay that way…

Most households have drawers designated for specific items with the most common being the utensil drawer.

However, when clutter accumulates in your kitchen, some items that don’t fit or belong in their proper drawer can spill over into other drawers, making it harder to find what you need quickly.

Try to stay away from a designated junk drawer, but instead opt for an organized “miscellaneous” drawer that houses things you need but blends different items like supplies, manuals, batteries, scissors, and other items that you use sparingly but need in your kitchen.

This drawer can be the trouble drawer and can turn into the junk drawer quickly…

Avoid this by:

  • Using small sandwich bags for paperclips, rubber bands and other small loose items
  • Using cable ties for electronic cables
  • Keeping batteries in their packaging
