3 Common Simple Living Mistakes That Hurt Your Progress & Create Frustration
Before you declutter and get rid of everything in sight, it’s important to be aware of potential mistakes so that you don’t waste your efforts.
Decluttering and simplifying can be challenging, and making mistakes can cost you time and money if you aren’t careful…

Once you’re aware of these mistakes, you’ll be better prepared to approach decluttering and simple living with the right mindset!
Here are 3 Common simple living mistakes that hurt your progress!

3 Common Simple Living Mistakes That Hurt Your Progress & Create Frustration
1. Being Overly Strict About Minimizing Your Wardrobe
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made when decluttering is being overly aggressive with downsizing my wardrobe and regretting my decisions down the road wishing I hadn’t gotten rid of certain clothing items.
I kept strict rules on color palette and ended up removing clothes from my wardrobe that were perfectly fine but didn’t match the capsule wardrobe I was going for.
Don’t get me wrong, getting rid of an oversized wardrobe is great and very rewarding, but the mistake is made when you’re getting rid of clothes you like and want to wear all because you want to follow strict color palettes or a strict total number of clothing items for a capsule wardrobe.
All in all keeping a minimalist or capsule wardrobe can be very beneficial, but strict rules can bite you down the line when you’re wishing you had kept good clothes you’d gotten rid of.
2. Holding Yourself To Strict Rules
Keeping strict rules when it comes to decluttering and simple living may seem nice at first because you may think that the more strict, the better the results…
However, when you hold rigid rules for yourself, you slowly start to lose the point of simplifying.
Simple living isn’t all about how much stuff you can get rid of, it’s more about being content with what you have and living in a way that brings you the most joy. Everything else that doesn’t align with this can be removed.
This means if you have stuff that you truly love and brings you joy, you shouldn’t get rid of it just because you’re going for a minimalistic look for your home or because you’re deciding all things you haven’t used in year needs to go…
The point is that there are exceptions to different decluttering rules and ways to simplify.
No rule fits all, and everything you do in regard to simple living should match your life and your current situation.
3. Forgetting About Practicality
The final simple living mistake involves practicality…
If you’re decluttering and simplifying without practicality, you’ll end up needing to spend more money and time to fix your mistakes.
For example, if you decide that you haven’t used your extra bed sheets, towels, or linens and want to downsize your linen closet, you may think this is perfectly fine since you haven’t needed them in a while…
However, even though you haven’t used these items maybe in years, you may choose to host a family event, and suddenly those extra linens may be needed for your extra bedrooms and guests etc.
The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to decluttering is that “extra” doesn’t automatically mean something should be removed; It could be excess in some situations and something you’ll need down the road in other situations.
