Simple Living Tips: 7 Easiest Ways To Declutter Your Life

1. Identify Your Essentials

What does it really mean to pick out your essentials?

Sure, it may seem a bit hard to narrow down your most important items you use regularly, but there is a way to simplify this question…

What Would You Take If You Traveled Full-Time?

Think about it this way: if you had to pack a bag to travel for an extended period of time or for the rest of your life, what would you bring?

Even though a lot of larger items that we need at home wouldn’t be taken, think about the things you simply can’t live without, and you’ll get a good sense of what is essential.

Also, thinking about what can fit in a carry-on and backpack will significantly help you narrow down what you think is possible to live with and without.

You would be surprised how many things you would forget you ever thought you needed after this exercise.

Would You Repurchase Destroyed Items?

Another fun way to determine your essentials is to imagine that your possessions were destroyed, lost, etc.

Now, for each item in question, ask yourself if you would repurchase…

If the answer is “no”, then it most likely isn’t essential to you and you’re better off donating, selling, or discarding.

2. Declutter Your Unused Clothes

Even if you’re intimidated by decluttering your entire wardrobe, simply identifying clothes you no longer wear can allow you to declutter a significant portion of your wardrobe right off the bat.

Clothes to get rid of easily include:

  • Clothes that are out of style
  • Clothes you no longer like
  • Clothes that no longer fit
  • Clothes that you haven’t touched in years

This type of low-hanging fruit can help you make a serious impact on the tidiness of your closet and your ability to pick out your clothes each morning.

The best part about getting rid of clothes is that it’s one of the easiest ways to declutter by donation and can also benefit another person if you no longer wear them.

3. Simplify Your Schedule

Being busy for the sake of being busy can be detrimental to your mental health and well-being.

Even if you enjoy being busy, taking time for a break and relaxing can help you recharge and feel more energized.

Be bold/intentional and say “no” to things that don’t serve your highest good or your goals…

Don’t go out drinking if your goal is to lose weight and exercise, and say “no” when your schedule is already full.

Overall, prioritize your time and make time for family and personal hobbies (or whatever makes you happy).

4. Delete Unused Apps From Your Phone

Deleting unused apps can take only a few minutes!

This can help reduce the visual clutter on your devices and allow you to find what you need faster.

This can also help reduce the chances of getting distracted when on your phone or tablet.

5. Cancel Unneeded Memberships

Cancel unneeded subscriptions, streaming, or gym memberships whenever you realize you don’t use or need them.

This saves you money and reduces your monthly expenses!

6. Declutter Your Bedroom

Your sleep affects many areas of your life…

Taking time to simplify this area of your home can allow you to improve different aspects of your life, such as:

If these areas of your life are out of balance, you can make poor choices and harm your physical health, and negatively influence your behavior and interactions with others.

Simplifying your bedroom is not only easier than other areas, it’s also a must in order to sleep properly and perform at your highest in other aspects of life!

7. Simplify Your Routines

If your life is feeling complicated, take some time to adjust your routines.

  • Simplify your morning routine – Pick a repeatable time to wake up and allow yourself time to complete 1-2 essential tasks you may be putting off (stretching, exercise, journaling, mindfulness, self-reflection, planning for the day)
  • Simplify your evening routine – Make sure to get enough sleep/pick a solid bedtime, reduce TV/screen time before bed (at least 1 hour), and allow time to read, journal, or self-reflect.

Final Thoughts

Even if you find decluttering your home a monumental task, there are still tons of easy ways you can make small changes in your life to embrace a more simplistic lifestyle.

Trying out these tips can help you minimize easy but important areas of your life that can then snowball into other things, like your home, etc.

Give these a try and see how much better you feel after making the change!
